The LocoPops cart will close this Saturday, but LocoPop-addicts need not fret-the stand will reopen in March, said LocoPops manager and co-founder Sumner Bicknell.
She explained that the closing was not due to a lack of interest from the Duke community but rather a "seasonality thing." Bicknell said management had predicted a decline in sales and staff because of the cold season, adding that business for the stand, which is in its first year, has been strong.
Director of Dining Services Jim Wulforst said he had not yet been informed of the closing. He added that he believed that the cart's decision to cease operations for the winter might have to do more with staffing issues.
"There are students here that, whether it's January or June, they want LocoPops. It's always hard to find [employees] to stand out in the cold," Wulforst said.
LocoPops employee Jamie Sneeringer said he was told only a few weeks ago about the closing.
"I knew it was going to be a seasonal thing, but it was kind of a surprise," he said.
Although the closing has not been publicized, several students said they think the business decision is reasonable, adding that the cart's reopening will be welcome.
"I think it's fair that being a popsicle stand they close for the winter. Part of the joy of a LocoPop is eating it in hot weather," sophomore Carol Cheng said.
But some LocoPops fans said they are distraught by the news.
Geoff Silver, a sophomore who enjoys a LocoPop once or twice a week, said he will miss the stand. Senior Jane Zhao said that although she does not buy LocoPops often, she has many friends who will likely feel the loss during the winter.
Bicknell confirmed that LocoPops will continue to be available in the Refectory Cafe throughout the winter. Wulforst also said the freezer from the stand may be moved to Joe van Gogh if the coffee shop complies.
"We're not going to let students be without LocoPops," he said.
Some students, however, like sophomore Amanda Morrall, expressed no desire for a LocoPop in the middle of winter, even with the warmth of an indoor vendor.
"I probably wouldn't get one anyway, unless I was really craving one," she said, adding that she prefers her LocoPops in the summer.
