Mi Gente, Duke's Latino student association, elected sophomore Arturo Ortega and freshman Alex Villasante to be the group's co-presidents for the upcoming year Tuesday night.
The incoming co-presidents said their main goal will be to increase participation in the organization. Attendance at events this year was high, but Ortega said only about 25 to 30 of about 460 Latino students at Duke turned out for the election.
"That's unacceptable," Ortega said. "If we [can] bring participation [in elections] up by 50 to 100 percent then it's going to be a successful year."
Villasante said she would like to see Mi Gente evolve into a group that meets the needs of Duke's entire Hispanic population as well as the entire Duke community.
"We want to have broad appeal but with unique Hispanic flair," Villasante said.
Mi Gente also elected eight members to its executive board Tuesday night: junior Nick Pardo, vice president; freshman Valerie Tornini, secretary/webmaster; freshman Nathalie Pimentel, treasurer; freshman Stephanie Maestre, academic affairs chair; sophomore Claire Rivero, community interaction chair; junior Tadina Ross, publicity interaction chair; junior Luis Velez, political affairs chair; and freshman Catalina Blanco, social chair.
